Le cosmodrome de Baïkonour / The cosmodrome of Baikonur
Le cosmodrome de Baïkonour se situe sur le Syr-Darya, à 200 kms à l'est de la mer d'Aral, en pleine steppe. Le centre spatial a été créé en 1956 et c'est d'ici que le Spoutnik 1, en 1957, et Yuri Gagarine, en 1961, s'élancèrent vers les étoiles. Baïkonour est le centre de lancement le plus actif au monde : 15 tirs par an environ, dont les tirs vers la station spatiale internationale. Dans le passé, Baïkonour fut un site majeur des tests des missiles intercontinentaux balistiques : plus de 2500 furent testés ici, le premier étant le R-7 Semiorka, qui lancé en aout 1957, quelques mois avant Spoutnik 1, parcourut 6000 kms. Le Général de Gaulle visita la base de Baïkonour en 1966. Depuis l'indépendance du Kazakhstan en 1991, la Russie paye un loyer au Kazakhstan. Il est très tentant mais très difficile de visiter la base pour assister à un lancement. Les autorisations sont données par les autorités russes, la base étant russe (on peut d'ailleurs y venir avec un visa russe), par contre, ne comptez pas trop recourir à une agence locale kazakhe pour accèder au site. The cosmodrome of Baikonour is located on Syr-Darya, 200 kms east of the Aral Sea, in full steppe.The space centre was created in 1956 and it is from here the Sputnik 1, in 1957, and Yuri Gagaryn, in 1961, sprang towards stars. Baîkonour is the most active launching centre in the world: 15 shootings a year approximately, of which shootings towards the international space station. In the past, Baïkonour was a major site of the tests of the ballistic intercontinental missiles: more than 2500 were tested here, the first being R-7 Semiorka, which launched in August 1957, a few months before Sputnik 1, traversed 6000 kms. The General de Gaulle visited the base of Baïkonour in 1966. Since the independence of Kazakhstan in 1991, Russia pays a rent in Kazakhstan. It is very seducting but very difficult to visit the base to witness a launching. The authorizations are given by the Russian authorities, the base being Russian (one can come there besides with a Russian visa).
